Morelli named Goalie of the Week for second time

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The top goaltender on the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team was honored by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) for his role in a 2-0-0 week for the Panthers.

Junior Evan Morelli (Reading, Mass.) was named the MASCAC Goalie of the Week for the second time this winter.

Morelli made 56 saves as the Panthers earned a pair of MASCAC wins last week. He made 25 stops in a 7-2 win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Monday, then stopped all 31 shots he faced to preserve a 1-0 shutout win over league-rival Salem State on Thursday night, his third whitewash of the year.

The 6-1 goaltender has been a big reason why the Panthers lead the MASCAC in scoring defense, allowing just 1.88 goals per game. He currently leads the nation in winning percentage, boasting an 11-1-0 (.917) mark, is second in the country in save percentage (.943) and third in goals against average (1.58) and shutouts (3). He tops the MASCAC in all four categories.

The Panthers (13-3-1, 9-1-0 MASCAC) have been on fire to open 2018, winning five-straight contests and nine-straight league games. PSU will host conference-foe Framingham State on Thursday (Jan. 25) at 6:00 p.m. on Scouts Day. The team will welcome local Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts for pregame activities and a postgame meet and greet and autograph session.
