Volonnino named to Weekly Honor Roll after huge week

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The top goal-scorer for the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team earned weekly honors from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) after helping guide the Panthers to a pair of MASCAC wins.

Junior Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.) was named to the MASCAC Men's Ice Hockey Weekly Honor Roll after registering five points as the Panthers continued their stranglehold over the rest of the league. This is the second time Volonnino has been honored by the MASCAC after previously earning Player of the Week recognition on Jan. 8.

The 5-11 forward kicked off the week with a pair of goals in a 3-2 win over Framingham State University on Scouts Night on Thursday. He put PSU ahead just 1:19 into the game then, after the Rams evened the score in the second, tallied his second of the game just four minutes later to restore the lead.

Volonnino had an even bigger game in Saturday's 8-2 win over Westfield State University. He picked up an assist on the Panthers' third power play goal of the first period as PSU jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the opening 20 minutes. After a quiet second period, Volonnino potted a shorthanded goal and then capped the scoring with his 14th tally of the year with just over five minutes to play.

His 14 goals are tops on the team and second in the MASCAC and his 25 points are tied for sixth best in the league.

The Panthers (15-3-1, 11-1-0 MASCAC) have won seven consecutive games and 11-straight conference games and currently hold a nine point lead over a trio of teams for the top spot in the MASCAC. PSU is back on the ice on Thursday (Feb. 1) for a league-game at Worcester State. Puck-drop is at 7:00 p.m.
