PSU Men’s Ice Hockey player earns MASCAC recognition

Bergstrom named to Weekly Honor Roll for first time

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The top-scoring defenseman for the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team was recognized by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) after his performance in a pair of MASCAC games last week.

Sophomore Victor Bergstrom (Angelholm, Sweden) was named to the MASCAC Men's Ice Hockey Weekly Honor Roll after registering four points as the Panthers went 1-1 on the week. It is the first weekly honor for Bergstrom.

All of Bergstrom's offensive output came in Plymouth's 7-5 setback to Fitchburg State University on Saturday night. After the Panthers fell behind 3-0, Bergstrom got PSU on the board when he tipped in a shot from the point by junior Tim Perron (Northborough, Mass.).

Less than two minutes later, Bergstrom and freshman JR Barone (West Chester, Pa.) streaked down the right side. Bergstrom fed Barone, who deked the Fitchburg goalie and stuffed a backhanded shot to the five-hole.

The Falcons responded with a pair of goals to push the lead to 5-2, but Bergstrom set up Perron and junior Ryan Stevens (Colleyville, Texas) for two more goals in the third period to even the game at 5-5. Fitchburg added a pair of late power play goals to earn the win and stop the Panthers' eight-game winning streak.

Bergstrom now has eight goals and 15 assists on the season. His eight tallies are tied for the third most on the team, while his 15 assists are tied for the second most.

Plymouth State (16-4-1, 12-2-0 MASCAC) travels to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Thursday (7:35 p.m.). PSU needs a win or a tie in one of its last four games to secure the MASCAC regular season title and the top seed for the upcoming MASCAC tournament.
