PSU Men’s Ice Hockey moves up in national rankings

Panthers now #14 in USCHO and D3hockey.com polls

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – After putting up seven goals in a win for the fifth time this season the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team moved up one spot in both the USCHO and D3hockey.com national rankings.

The Panthers are now ranked #14 in the nation after topping Framingham State University, 7-1, in their only game last week.

PSU got on the board first with a blast from freshman Hunter Gunski (Goffstown, N.H.) before the Rams scored the equalizer at the 7:37 mark of the opening period. From there, junior Michael Covach (Shillington, Pa.) and the Panther offense took control. PSU scored six unanswered goals, including three from Covach, to run away with its 14th Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) regular season win of the year. Covach's first career hat trick was the highlight as the Panthers reached 14 conference wins for the fourth straight season and fifth time in six years.

The top four teams in both polls are identical with Adrian holding the top spot, followed by St. Norbert, Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Salve Regina. Plymouth State trails Marian, ranked 13th, by 30 points in the USCHO poll and trails Norwich, ranked 13th in the D3hockey.com poll, by 27 points.

The NCAA will release its second of four regional rankings later today. Last week the Panthers debuted at #8 in the East Region.

The Panthers (18-4-2, 14-2-1 MASCAC) wrap up the regular season at home against Westfield State University tonight at 6:00 p.m. PSU has already secured the MASCAC regular season title and the top seed for the MASCAC Tournament. Plymouth State will receive an opening round bye and will host a semifinal game next Tuesday (Feb. 27) at 7:00 p.m.
