Panthers still #8 in East Region
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The NCAA released its first second men's ice hockey regional rankings on Tuesday and Plymouth State University is still among the ten teams included.
The Panthers continue to hold the eighth spot in the East Region, though there was some shuffling between the other teams.
PSU is currently #14 in the country according to both the USCHO and D3hockey.com national rankings, but the NCAA Regional Rankings are the most important. NCAA rankings will be used to determine at-large bids for the NCAA tournament, as well as tournament seeding.
Today's release is the second of four regional rankings, with additional releases set for next Tuesday (Feb. 27) and the following Monday (Mar. 5). The final rankings are used to determine the NCAA tournament selections.
Plymouth State has squared off against two other teams that appear in the East Region rankings this season. The Panthers topped Endicott College, number nine in the rankings, 3-2 in the season opener on Oct. 27, and were nipped by Trinity College, which holds the number five spot, 2-1 on Nov. 25.
PSU (18-4-2, 14-2-1 MASCAC) wraps up the regular season tonight at Hanaway Rink against Westfield State University. Plymouth has already secured the MASCAC regular season championship for the sixth time in seven years, earning the top seed for the upcoming MASCAC Tournament. The Panthers will receive a first round bye and will host a semifinal contest next Tuesday (Feb. 27) at 7:00 p.m.
