Panthers climb to #7 in third release
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The NCAA released its third men's ice hockey regional rankings on Tuesday and Plymouth State University moved up one spot to number seven in the East Region.
Plymouth State (19-4-2) is tied with Utica College for the seventh spot. Salve Regina University retained its hold on the top spot in the region, with the University of New England moving ahead of Hobart College for the second spot.
PSU is currently #13 in the country according to the USCHO national rankings, and is #14 in the D3hockey.com poll, but the NCAA Regional Rankings are the most important. NCAA rankings will be used to determine at-large bids for the NCAA tournament, as well as tournament seeding.
Today's release is the third of four regional rankings, with the final release set for Monday, Mar. 5. The final rankings are used to determine the NCAA tournament selections.
PSU will play in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament semifinals tonight at Hanaway Rink. The top-seeded Panthers host fourth seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m. The winner will advance to Saturday's championship game. Should the Panthers advance, the finals would be back at Hanaway Rink with game time set for 7:00 p.m.
Plymouth State won the regular season title for the sixth time in seven years and has advanced to the MASCAC championship game each of the last six seasons, all under the direction of eighth-year head coach Craig Russell. PSU is seeking its third appearance in the NCAA Division III men's ice hockey tournament.
