Volonnino named Player of the Week for Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The top goal-scorer for the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team was honored by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) on Monday as the league announced its weekly award winners.

Senior Matt Volonnino (Hackettstown, N.J.) was named the MASCAC Men's Ice Hockey Player of the Week brought to you by GEICO.

Volonnino had a four-point week to lead the Panthers to a pair of MASCAC overtime wins. He notched two goals in Thursday's 4-3 win against Worcester State, including the game-tying tally with just 3:25 remaining in regulation.

On Saturday he dished out a pair of assists to help PSU top Fitchburg State by the same score. His second assist led to the game-winner with two minutes left in the overtime.

Volonnino currently leads the Panthers with 14 goals and is second on the team with 29 points on the year. His nine power play tallies are the second-most in the nation.

Plymouth State (12-6-3, 9-3-2 MASCAC) hosts the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in a huge game on Thursday (Feb. 7). With just four games remaining in the regular season, PSU holds a one point lead over the Corsairs for the top spot in the league.
