PSU Men’s Ice Hockey player earns MASCAC weekly honor

Barone tabbed Player of the Week

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – For the second straight week a member of the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team was honored by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) as one of the league's weekly awards winners.

Sophomore JR Barone (West Chester, Pa.) was selected as the MASCAC Men's Ice Hockey Player of the Week brought to you by GEICO after helping the Panthers to a pair of wins.

Barone recorded four points for the Panthers as the team extended its lead in the MASCAC standings while running its winning streak to four-straight games. He helped set up the game-winning goal in Thursday's 4-2 win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, then followed with two goals and an assist as PSU rallied past Salem State, 5-4, on Saturday.

Against the Vikings, Barone twice gave the Panthers a third period lead. He broke a 3-3 deadlock just 2:48 into the final stanza, only to see Salem State knot the game at four three minutes later. The tie was short-lived, however, as Barone struck again just 38 seconds later, deflecting a shot past the Salem State goaltender to account for the 5-4 win.

Barone is currently tied for third on the team with nine goals, while his 16 points are the sixth most among the Panthers. He ranks ninth in the country with four game-winning goals.

Plymouth State (14-6-3, 11-3-2 MASCAC) has locked up a first round bye for the conference tournament as the Panthers are zeroing in on a third consecutive regular season title. The Panthers host Framingham State in a Senior Day contest on Saturday (Feb. 16, 6:00 p.m.), before closing out the regular season at Westfield State the following Tuesday (Feb. 19).
