Barone and Abbate honored after 2-0 week for Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – After helping guide the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team to an unbeaten week, junior JR Barone (West Chester, Pa.) and freshman Myles Abbate (Norwell, Mass.) were recognized by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) with weekly recognition.

Barone had a five-point week to earn Player of the Week recognition, while Abbate notched two goals and an assist to earn Rookie of the Week honors. Both awards are sponsored by GEICO.

Barone tallied his fifth goal of the season, a power play strike, in Thursday's 4-1 win over Framingham State to restore a two-goal advantage after the Rams had cut the deficit to 2-1. He also notched an assist on the Panthers' first goal. On Saturday, Barone was a key puck distributer picking up three assists in the Panthers' 7-1 win over Westfield State.

Abbate's pass set up the game-winning goal in PSU's win over Framingham State on Thursday, then he tallied a pair of goals, including the game's first just 1:04 into play, to set the tone in a big win over the Owls on Saturday.

Barone has been a regular contributor on offense for the Panthers this season. His five goals are tied for the third most on the team, while his seven assists equal the second most. Abbate, meanwhile, is the team's leading scorer with nine goals and 14 points.

After a slow start to 2020, Plymouth State (7-7-2, 7-1-1 MASCAC) has gone unbeaten in its last three games, all league contests, including head-to-head clashes with the Panthers' closest competition in the conference. With the win over Westfield State and a 2-2 tie against Fitchburg State nine days ago, PSU now holds three-point leads over both schools in the league standings.

PSU hosts a pair of MASCAC foes this week in Worcester State on Thursday (Jan. 23, 6:00 p.m.) and UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (Jan. 25, 7:00 p.m.).
