Weekly Honors for PSC Lacrosse players
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Two Plymouth State College lacrosse players recently received weekly honors for their performances in games last week.
Junior goaltender Brenna Mararazzo (Salem, NH) was selected Defensive Player of the Week in the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA), and freshman Jim Martocchio (Simsbury, CT) was named Rookie of the Week in the Pilgrim League.
Matarazzo, a Panther basketball player in her first season on the lacrosse team, led PSC to two wins in her debut in the Plymouth State goal. Pressed into action after an injury to PSC's starter, Matarazzo allowed only seven goals to Eastern Connecticut and Keene State while making 26 saves as PSC won its first two NEWLA games.
The Panther women are off to a 3-1 start this season, including 2-0 in the NEWLA. PSC is tied for first place in the NEWLA Northern Division, along with Colby-Sawyer and New England College, all with 2-0 conference records. This is the first year for the NEWLA, with a conference post-season tournament scheduled for the first week in May.
Martocchio, a 5'8", 160-pound attackman, scored six goals in leading PSC to a 1-1 week. His biggest goal may have been the one that sent the PSC-New England College game into overtime, where the Panthers came away with an 11-10 victory.
The Panther men, who won several Cox League titles earlier this decade, are off to a 4-3 start, including an 0-1 mark in their first year in the Pilgrim League. Five of the eight remaining regular season games are at home for PSC, which could get the Panthers into the Pilgrim League post-season tournament in May.
