PSC Men's Lacrosse edged by Bates

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Dave Frederick (Hartford, Conn.) recorded five goals and two assists Wednesday, leading the Bates College men's lacrosse team to a 12-10 non-conference victory over Plymouth State College at Panther Field.

The Bobcats, who are ranked 13th in New England, led 8-4 at halftime and 12-7 with three minutes remaining in the game. PSC staged a furious comeback in the final minutes, scoring three unanswered goals, but the clock ran out on the Panthers.

The victory improves Bates's record to 8-4 overall, while PSC drops to 8-5. All five of PSC's losses have come to ranked teams (New England or nationally).

Joining Frederick in the scoring department for Bates were sophomore Jack Sandler with three goals, freshman Jeff Critchlow with two goals and an assist, and junior Aaron Sells and senior Jon Miller with a goal and an assist apiece. PSC kept senior Mike D'Addario, Bates' all-time leading goal-scorer, without a point.

The outcome spoiled a record-breaking performance by PSC junior Jim Martocchio (Simsbury, Conn.). The Panther sniper, who leads the nation in Division III in goals (5.64 per game) and ranks fifth in points (6.36 per game), tallied six goals and one assist against the Bobcats, the seventh time this season he has scored at least a half dozen goals in a game. He increased his single-season school mark to 71 markers, and established a new PSC all-time record for goals scored with his 177th. He now has 181 goals (along with 28 assists and 209 points), breaking the old mark of 176 goals by Scott Walden from 1993-96.

The main set-up man for Martocchio is classmate JP Sallese (Beverly, Mass.), who had a goal and five assists Wednesday. Sallese, who is ninth in the nation in assists (3.36 per game), increased his team-leading assist total to 45. He is seven assists away from matching the single-season school mark of 52 assists, set by Walden in 1994.

In addition to Martocchio and Sallese, PSC got a goal and an assist from Andy Quesnel (Middlebury, Vt.), and solo scores from freshmen Ken McGuire (Wayland, Mass.) and Henry Sabens (Falmouth, Mass.).

The Panthers also got a terrific performance in goal from sophomore Jon Clark (Yarmouth, Maine), who matched his season high with 28 saves. Bates goalie Dave Pillsbury registered 16 saves.

The Panthers host UMass Dartmouth Saturday (4/29) in the home finale (2 p.m.), with a Pilgrim League play-off berth on the line. Bates returns home to host Tufts Thursday (4/27) at 3:30 p.m.
