PSC Men's Lax too much for UMD in home finale
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Juniors Jim Martocchio (Simsbury, Conn.) and JP Sallese (Beverly, Mass.) combined for 11 goals and five assists Saturday, as Plymouth State College defeated UMass Dartmouth, 21-9, in a key Pilgrim League Northwest Division contest at Panther Field.
The win improves PSC to 9-5 overall and 5-1 in the division, while UMD completes its season at 6-8 overall and 3-4 in the division. The Panthers will play a divisional make-up game at UMass Boston on Monday (3:30 p.m.), with the winner receiving the final Pilgrim League divisional play-off berth and the loser ending its season.
Leading 4-2 after one period, PSC outscored the Corsairs 9-1 in the second quarter to take a 13-3 at halftime. The Panthers extended their lead to 20-6 by the end of the third quarter, when head coach Nate Ostis removed the starters.
Martocchio scored six goals and assisted on another Saturday, increasing his school-record totals to 77 goals this season and 187 in his career. Sallese collected a game-high nine points with five goals and four assists, improving his season totals to 24 goals and 49 assists. Sallese needs just three more assists to match the PSC single-season assist mark of 52, set by Scott Walden in 1994.
The Panthers also got plenty of offense from sophomore Andy Quesnel (Middlebury, Vt.) and seniors Ben Stone (Acton, Mass.) and Jon Hunt (Guilford, Conn.). Quesnel tallied four goals, Stone added two goals and four assists, and Hunt contributed a pair of goals and three assists. Also getting into the scoring act for PSC were junior Tony Bosco (Londonderry, NH) with one goal, and freshman Ken McGuire (Wayland, Mass.) with a goal and two assists.
Sophomore Jared Gray (Weymouth, Mass.) provided much of the Corsairs offense, scoring five goals and assisting on one. Sophomore Jim Ruggeri (Waltham, Mass.) connected on three goals, and senior Michael Dion (Waltham, Mass.) scored once.
PSC sophomore Jon Clark (Yarmouth, Maine) made 17 saves in the first three quarters, while freshman reserve Davin Townley-Tilson (Concord, NH) made six saves in the fourth quarter. UMD goalie Adam Centofanti (Waltham, Mass.) made 14 saves.
