PSC Men's Lax eliminated in Pilgrim League semifinal

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Springfield College jumped out to a 15-1 halftime lead, and went on to defeat Plymouth State College 24-6 Wednesday afternoon in the semi-finals of the Pilgrim League Men's Lacrosse Tournament.

The Pride, Southern Division champs in the regular season, advance to the Pilgrim League Championship Game on Saturday in Springfield against Northern Division champion Eastern Connecticut. The Warriors advanced to the title game with a 17-2 win over MIT Wednesday in the other semi-final.

Springfield, ranked 20th in the latest USILA Division III poll, never gave PSC a chance. The Pride led 6-0 after one period and 15-1 at halftime before cruising to the victory. Springfield takes a 9-6 record into Saturday title game, while PSC is now 10-6 and hoping for an ECAC post-season berth next week.

The outcome overshadowed a couple of milestones reached by PSC's offensive stars. Junior Jim Martocchio (Simsbury, Conn.), the nation's leading goal scorer, registered four goals against Springfield to increase his school-record total to 86 goals, 14 assists and a remarkable 100 points. He also increased his career numbers to 196 goals, 30 assists and 226 points. Martocchio as set school records this season for goals in a game (11), season, and career, and points in a season and career.

Classmate JP Sallese (Beverly, Mass.) registered three assists against the Pride, establishing a new school record for assists in a season with 54. He improves his season totals to 26 goals and 80 points, and increases his career numbers to 60 goals, 94 assists and 154 points.

Seniors Jon Hunt (Guilford, Conn.) and Sean Murphy (Eliot, Maine) also scored for PSC. Sophomore Jon Clark (Yarmouth, Maine) played a strong game in the Panther goal, making 17 saves.
