PSC cruises past Vikings in LEC Tourney
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior attackmen Jim Martocchio (Simsbury, Conn.) and J.P. Sallese (Beverly, Mass.) combined for 11 goals and eight assists Tuesday evening to lead Plymouth State College past Salem State College in the first round of the inaugural Little East Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament at Panther Field.
The fourth-seeded Panthers, now 7-6, advance to a semifinal contest on Thursday at top-seeded and regular season champion Eastern Connecticut (4:00 p.m.) The fifth-seeded Vikings conclude their season with a 3-11 mark.
PSC maintained control of the game throughout, leading 3-0 after one period and 8-1 at the half. The Panthers extended the margin to 16-3 after three quarters before cruising home with the win.
Martocchio scored seven goals and Sallese added four goals and eight assists to lead the Panther offense. Martocchio now has a team-high 51 goals, the fourth straight season he has gone over the 50-goal plateau. Sallese leads the team with 47 assists and 75 points. He remains seven assists shy of his own single-season assist mark and nine assists short of the PSC career record.
Sophomore Kevin Finnerty (Bay Shore, N.Y.) tallied a season-high five goals for the Panthers, and classmate Ken McGuire (Wayland, Mass.) contributed three goals and three assists. Junior Nolan Fredericks (Temple, N.H.) chipped in with a pair of goals, and senior Tony Bosco (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Jason Biedrzycki (Amherst, N.H.) added one goal each.
Salem State got one goal apiece from senior Steve Pasciuto (Malden, Mass.), freshman Greg LeColst (Middleton, Mass.), and juniors Brendan Lynch (Stoneham, Mass.) and Chuck Campobasso (Medford, Mass.)
Junior goalie Jon Clark (Yarmouth, Maine) made 14 saves for the Panthers in the first three quarters, and senior Davin Townley-Tilson (Concord, N.H.) came off the bench to make one save in the final period. Junior Tim Finn (Chelsea, Mass.) made 16 saves for Salem State.
