NEC hands PSC non-conference setback
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - New England College overcame an early 4-0 deficit Thursday evening and went on to register a 16-11 non-conference men's lacrosse victory over Plymouth State College at Panther Field. The win improves NEC to 4-7 while PSC drops to 4-6.
The Panthers scored the first four goals of the contest to jump out on top, but the Pilgrims came back with three unanswered goals to make it a 4-3 game after one period. NEC then outscored PSC 6-2 in the second frame to go up 9-6 at halftime. It was 11-7 in favor of the Pilgrims after three quarters, and NEC put the game away with four straight goals in the fourth period.
Both teams used a balanced offensive attack. NEC got three goals apiece from freshman Nick Mayo (Marshfield, Mass.) and juniors Matt Stack (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.), Josh Dionne (Brunswick, Maine), and Jim Donlon (Lynbrook, N.Y.). Junior Ross Mendello (Levittown, N.Y.) contributed two goals, and freshman Steve Thierfeld (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Alex Hardy (Easton, Md.) added one goal apiece.
PSC was led by senior Andrew Quesnel (Middlebury, Vt.), who tallied two goals and two assists. Senior Eric Gilbert (South Portland, Maine), junior Ken McGuire (Wayland, Mass.) and sophomore Sam Harding (South Berwick, Maine) also tallied two goals each, and juniors Jason Biedrzycki (Amherst, N.H.) and Kevin Finnerty (Bayshore, N.Y.) and freshman Pat O'Malley (South Windsor, Conn.) chipped in with one goal apiece.
PSC junior goalie Dan Egan (Cambridge, Mass.) made 11 saves, while NEC goalie Matt Brown (Topsham, Maine) made 21 stops.
The Panthers are back in action Saturday with a Little East Conference contest at UMass Boston (1 p.m.). NEC plays Saturday ay Nichols (1:00 p.m.).
