Saint Anselm soars past PSU Men’s Lacrosse in opener

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Saint Anselm College used nine second-half goals to defeat Plymouth State University Friday night, 11-6, in a non-conference men's lacrosse game played at Southern N.H. University. The victory gave Hawks first-year head coach Gerry Byrne his first collegiate win, while PSU fell in its season opener under first-year coach Andrew Brauch.

Saint Anselm (1-2 overall) broke open a 2-2 halftime tie with five straight goals to start the third quarter, including a trio of goals within a two-minute span late in the action. Kevin Allwarden (Amherst, N.H./ Souhegan) scored two of the goals in the decisive quarter and Cliff Ambrose (Beverly, Mass./Bridgeton Academy) assisted on two of the tallies.

Trailing 9-3 in the fourth, Plymouth State junior Steve Skinner (Hingham, Mass.) put home a pair of goals, including one short-handed to cut the deficit to four, but Ambrose and Allwarden hooked up on a goal with exactly six minutes to play and the Hawks cruised to their first win of the season.

Ambrose led the Hawks with three goals and two assists while Allwarden tallied an early hat trick and finished with four points. Mike Smith (Beverly, Mass./ Beverly) added a pair of goals while Paul Driscoll (Milton, Mass./ Kimball Union) and Tim Amrstrong (Winchester, Mass./ Winchester) each had a goal and one assist. Alex Gostanian (Andover, Mass./ Andover) was superb in goal for the Hawks, stopping 14 shots including eight alone in the fourth quarter.

Skinner logged a hat trick for the Panthers while junior Matt McCormick (Sudbury, Mass.) added a goal and one assist. Sophomore Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) and junior Pat O'Malley (South Windsor, Conn.) also collected goals for PSU, and sophomore netminder Michael Rodrick (Plaistow, N.H./ Pinkerton) stopped 10 shots in the Panther goal.

Saint Anselm returns to action on Wednesday when the Hawks travel to N. Andover, Mass. for a Northeast-10 Conference opener against Merrimack College. PSU (0-1) plays another non-conference road game Wednesday at Bates College (4:00 p.m.).
