GORHAM, Maine - Junior Pat O'Malley (South Windsor, Conn.) scored three goals, and sophomore Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.), junior Steve Skinner (Hingham, Mass.) and senior Eric Gobiel (Chelmsford, Mass.) added two goals apiece Tuesday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to an 11-2 win over the University of Southern Maine in Little East Conference men's lacrosse action.
Plymouth State evened its record at 3-3 overall and improved to 2-1 in the conference, while Southern Maine slipped to 2-4 overall and 0-2.
The Panthers scored the game's first seven goals, taking a 4-0 lead at halftime and adding the first three goals of the third quarter. Gagnon and O'Malley found the net in the first quarter, while Skinner added a pair in the second frame. O'Malley, Gagnon and junior Matt McCormick (Sudbury, Mass.) gave the Panthers a 7-0 lead at 3:31 of the third.
Southern Maine responded with a goal from freshman Shane Billings (North Berwick, Maine) at 1:34 of the quarter, but Gobiel scored with 35 seconds remaining, and the Panthers took an 8-1 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Mark Bubier (Greene, Maine) scored the Huskies' second goal at 13:19 of the fourth quarter, but the Panthers answered with goals from Gobiel, sophomore Bobby DaBrieo (Woburn, Mass.) and O'Malley to account for the 11-2 final score.
In net for the Huskies, sophomore Jeff Lamoureux (Walpole, Mass.) made 12 saves, while the Panthers' trio of freshman Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.), sophomore Michael Rodrick (Plaistow, N.H.) and senior Tim McNamara (West Lebanon, N.H.) combined for three saves.
Southern Maine will entertain the University of New England on Thursday, while Plymouth State returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Eastern Connecticut.
