Gagnon leads PSU Mens Lacrosse over UMass BostonBOSTON, Mass.
- Junior Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) scored four goals Saturday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University men's lacrosse team over the University of Massachusetts Boston, 8-6, in a Little East Conference contest at the Clark Athletic Center.
The Beacons fall to 7-2 overall and 2-2 in the LEC, while the Panthers stopped a four-game losing skid and improve to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Almost half of the day's scoring occurred in the first period. UMB cracked the scoring column first when junior Patrick Donlan (Norwell, Mass.) found the back of the net at 11:08. Gagnon answered for PSU just under two minutes later, and followed with another goal at the 5:50 mark in a man-up situation. Sophomore Matt Ficarra (Syracuse, N.Y.) knotted the score at 2-2 at 2:11, but junior John Padua (Hamden, Conn.) reclaimed the lead for PSU 20 seconds later. Gagnon deposited a goal with just five ticks left on the first quarter clock to give the Panthers a 4-2 lead.
UMass Boston pulled even in the second quarter when the nation's leader in points per game, sophomore Ryan O'Rourke (Milton, Mass.), scored at 13:08 and 4:04 to tie the tilt at 4-4. PSU senior Steve Skinner (Hingham, Mass.), returning from an injury, made sure that the Panthers took a lead into the intermission, scoring with just two seconds remaining in the first half for a 5-4 PSU edge.
Gagnon netted the lone goal of the third quarter, and junior Matt Fontenault (North Kingstown, R.I.) gave the Panthers their biggest lead of the day (7-4) just 1:26 into the fourth quarter. Donlan answered for the Beacons at 11:14 to pull UMB to within 7-5, but junior Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) netted a goal at 3:50 to give PSU an 8-5 lead. Sophomore Andrew Rowley (New Canaan, Conn.) capped the afternoon's scoring for UMB with 1:22 left to play.
Sophomore Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) was outstanding for the Panthers, making 16 saves to earn the victory. Sophomore Nick Eaton (Rowley, MA) stopped 10 shots to for the Beacons.
PSU gets right back into action Sunday with a non-conference contest at Johnson State (1:00 p.m.). The Beacons will be in action again Tuesday when they travel to Mass. Maritime (3:30 p.m.)
