PSU Mens Lax posts fourth straight victory with win over Southern Maine
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Freshman Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) and junior Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) registered five points apiece and junior Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) recorded his 100th career point Sunday afternoon as Plymouth State University defeated the University of Southern Maine, 14-9, in a Little East Conference men's lacrosse game at rainy Panther Field.
The victory was PSU's fourth in a row and pulls the Panthers back to the .500 mark at 6-6 overall, 2-3 in conference play. The Huskies, which led at the end of the first two quarters but couldn't hold on, fall to 3-7 overall and 0-5 in the LEC.
USM took a 3-0 lead midway through the opening frame, thanks to two goals and one assist from junior Travis Witham (Cape Elizabeth, Maine). PSU came back with the next four goals, two at the end of the first quarter and two more to start the second, to take a 4-3 lead. The Huskies regained the advantage with two goals late in the second quarter and held a 5-4 lead at halftime.
Gagnon's goal for PSU late in the first quarter gave him 100 career points on 76 goals and 24 assists. He becomes the 19th player in school history to go over the 100-point barrier.
The Panthers owned the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 6-1 to pull ahead 10-6. Dabrieo led the Panther onslaught with a goal and four assists in the quarter, while Krinsky scored three times. PSU put the game away with three unanswered goals midway though the fourth quarter.
Krinsky finished with five goals and senior Steve Skinner (Hingham, Mass.) scored twice. Freshmen John Cogswell (Jefferson, Mass.), Mike Russell (Concord, N.H.), Ryan Silva (Chelmsford, Mass.), Tony Aguiar (Bow, N.H.), and John Brule (Northboro, Mass.) all collected one goal for PSU.
Witham led USM with three goals, while senior Matt Butler (Barnstable, Mass.) and sophomore Brian White (Gorham, Maine) added a goal and two assists apiece. Freshman Tim Beauchamp (Lexington, Mass.) and senior Mark St. John (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) also scored once for the Huskies.
Sophomore Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 10 saves to earn the win in the Panther goal, and sophomore Nick Grobe (Winchester, Mass.) came on for the final six minutes and made two saves. Junior Jeff Lamoureux (Walpole, Mass.) recorded five saves in the first three quarters for the Huskies, and junior Mark Morissette (Wales, Maine) made two saves in the fourth quarter.
PSU wraps up the regular season next Sunday (May 1) with a Little East Conference make-up game at home against UMass Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.) USM returns to action with a non-conference tilt Tuesday at Colby College (4:30 p.m.)
