Gagnon’s OT goal lifts PSU Men’s Lacrosse past Western Conn.

DANBURY, Conn. - Senior Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal two minutes and 19 seconds into overtime Saturday afternoon to give Plymouth State University a dramatic 10-9 come-from-behind victory over Western Connecticut State University in the Little East Conference men's lacrosse opener for both schools.

The Panthers staged a furious rally to pull out the win, coming from behind all afternoon.  PSU trailed 7-2 in the second quarter, 8-4 midway through the third, and 9-6 going into the final frame before rattling off three unanswered goals to tie the game, one each by sophomore Ryan Silva (Chelmsford, Mass.), Gagnon and senior John Padua (Hamden, Conn.).  Padua scored the tying goal with 5:14 remaining to set up the extra session and Gagnon's game-winner.

It was the second straight overtime game for PSU (2-4 overall), who lost on Tuesday in OT at Wheaton by the same score.  Four of PSU's six games have been decided by one or two goals.  Plymouth State and WCSU (3-5 overall) were picked third and fourth, respectively, in the LEC pre-season poll.

Gagnon led the Panthers on the afternoon with three goals, while Padua and senior Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) each finished with two goals and one assist.  Senior Matt Fontenault (North Kingstown, R.I.) also scored twice for the winners, and sophomore Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) and freshman Dan Maiorana (Walpole, Mass.) collected one assist apiece.

WestConn got three goals and an assist from sophomore Brendan Phillips (Mahopac, N.Y.), two from goals sophomore Dennis Skarda (Danbury, Conn.) and junior John Stashenko (Norwalk, Conn.) and one each from junior Joe Parciasepe (Bethel, Conn.) and freshman Richard Allaire (Trumbull, Conn.)

Junior Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned the win in goal for the Panthers, while Colonial senior Chuck Byrne (New Rochelle, N.Y.) tallied 14 saves in the loss.

PSU continues its weekend road trip with a 1:30 p.m. game Sunday at Mount Ida College in Newton, Mass.  WestConn travels to in-state rival Eastern Conn. on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. start.
