PSU Mens Lacrosse defeats Southern Maine
GORHAM, Maine - Sophomore attack Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) dished out five assists Thursday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to an 8-3 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference men's lacrosse game at Hodgdon Field.
The win was the second straight for the Panthers in conference play, and improved their overall mark to 3-5. PSU is unbeaten in two LEC games. Southern Maine dropped its fourth straight to fall to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Freshman Luke Metraw (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the Panthers goal scoring with three goals. Sophomore Tony Aguiar (Northboro, Mass.) added a pair, and senior Matt Fontenault (North Kingstown, R.I.), junior Nick Pearson (Peterborough, N.H.) and freshman Nate Gooden (New Boston, N.H.) each scored once.
Freshman Garett Shaw (Brunswick, Maine), junior Mark Bubier (Greene, Maine/St. Dominic) and junior Jeff Donovan (Walpole, Mass.) each had one goal for the Huskies.
Krinsky set up Metraw for the first goal of the game three minutes after the opening draw. The lead held up until the final seconds of the quarter when the hosts scored twice to give USM a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.
The Panthers struck for a pair of goals 43 seconds apart early in the second quarter to take charge. Krinsky set up Aguiar, then assisted on Fontenault's goal to give PSU a 3-2 lead. Senior John Padua (Hamden, Conn.) picked up the first of his two assists by setting up Aguiar, and the Panthers would take a 4-2 lead into the halftime break.
Southern Maine closed the gap to 4-3 just 35 seconds into the third period as Shaw found the net. Unfortunately for the home side, that would be their last goal of the game. Krinsky set up Metraw and Pearson within the next two minutes to extend the Panthers' lead to 6-3. Metraw and Gooden added insurance markers in the fourth quarter.
Juniors Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Nick Grobe (Winchester, Mass.) combined for seven saves in the PSU nets. Senior Jeff Lamoureux (Walpole, Mass.) played another strong game for the Huskies making 19 saves. PSU outshot USM 39-16.
Southern Maine will try for its first win of the season on Saturday when it travels to Western Connecticut for an LEC game. Plymouth State hosts Eastern Connecticut Saturday in its home opener at Panther Field (1:00 p.m.)
