Third-quarter surge leads Keene State past PSU in key LEC men’s lax tilt

KEENE, N.H. - Freshman Tony Santa Fe (Derry, N.H.) scored three key third quarter goals to help lift Keene State College to a 15-11 Little East Conference men's lacrosse victory over rival PlymouthState University Wednesday afternoon at the Owl Athletic Complex.

            Santa Fe's first goal of the third quarter broke a 6-6 halftime tie, and after PSU tied it at 7-all, Santa Fe put the Owls in front for good with consecutive man-up goals.  PSU closed the gap to 11-9 early in the fourth quarter, but KSC went on to post its 11th straight win against LEC schools, dating back through last season.  Ranked 14th in New England, KSC is now 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the LEC, while PSU fell to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

            Sophomores Ryan Hazelton (Chester, N.H.) and Peter Lauranzano (Beverly, Mass.) chipped in with three goals each for KSC, which moved into a first place tie in the LEC with Eastern Conn. Freshman Casey Brodersen (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Mike Fontaine (Wolfeboro, N.H.) added two goals each for the Owls.

            Plymouth State had a balanced scoring attack, with seniors Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.), Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.), and John Padua (Hamden, Conn.) and sophomore Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) all finishing with two goals.  Senior Matt Fontenault (North Kingston, R.I.) and freshmen Dan Maiorana (Walpole, Mass.)  and Luke Metraw (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored once each.

            KSC sophomore goalie Matt Johnson (Derry, N.H.) finished with nine saves.  Junior Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) stopped 15 shots for the Panthers.

            Keene State has won the last five meetings between the two rivals.

            Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, KSC is at Western Conn. while Plymouth State hosts UMass-Boston (1:00 p.m.)  PSU will be celebrating Senior Day this Saturday at Panther Field.
