PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Christopher Hanafin (Burlington, Mass.) broke an 8-8 tie with 1:53 remaining in the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon to lift the University of Massachusetts Boston to a 9-8 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference men's lacrosse game at Panther Field.
Hanafin finished as the game's leading scorer with four goal and two assists, but it was his goal in the final two minutes, assisted by classmate David Liberatore (Medford, Mass.) that gave the Beacons the win. UMB improves to 5-2 on the season, 3-1 in conference play, while PSU drops to 4-8 overall and 2-3 in the LEC.
The Beacons had the upper hand for the first quarter, taking a 3-1 advantage and leading 5-3 at the end of the period. The Panthers came back to score the only two goals of the second quarter to make it a 5-5 game at halftime.
PSU took a one-goal lead less than a minute into the second half, but the visitors came back with two unanswered goals late in the third period to regain the advantage. UMB went up by two goals, but the Panthers rallied to tie the game, scoring the equalizer with 5:41 on the clock and setting up Hanafin's game-winner.
Sophomore Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) led the Panthers with two goals and two assists. Seniors Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) and Matt Fontenault (North Kingstown, R.I.) also scored twice for the home team, and senior Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.) and sophomore John Brule (Northboro, Mass.) tallied one goal apiece.
Joining Hanafin in the scoring column for UMB were freshman Robert Cusack (Braintree, Mass.) with three goals and freshman Robert Black (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and sophomore Chris Nyman (Feeding Hills, Mass.) with one each.
Junior Nick Eaton (Rowley, Mass.) earned the victory in net for UMB with seven saves. Junior Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 12 saves in goal for PSU.
PSU is back in action Tuesday with a non-conference game at Wentworth (6:00 p.m.) UMB visits Mass. Maritime on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.)
