Gagnon leads PSU Mens Lacrosse past Wentworth
BOSTON, Mass. - Senior Jon Gagnon (New Bedford, Mass.) scored a game-high five goals, including three in the fourth quarter, as Plymouth State University scored six times in the final stanza to take a 10-4 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology Tuesday afternoon in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. PSU got back on the winning track and improved to 5-8 overall, while Wentworth dropped to 4-6.
Wentworth junior Adam Kenniston (Plainville, Mass.) opened the scoring 3:34 into the contest. That lead remained until Gagnon scored his first of the game, a man-up goal, with 5:40 left in the period. The Panthers took a 2-1 lead two minutes later on a goal by senior Matt Fontenault (North Kingstown, R.I.)
The teams traded extra-man goals to open the second period as Wentworth sophomore Nick Lambros (Forestdale, Mass.) knotted the game at 2-all and Panther junior Nick Pearson (Peterborough, N.H.) game Plymouth State a 3-2 lead 90 seconds later. Gagnon netted his second of the game to give PSU a 4-2 lead, but Keniston responded with 3:47 left to pull the Leopards back within one at the half.
Wentworth pulled even midway through the third as freshman Thomas Zygmant (Southport, Conn.) scored with 7:47 on the clock. That would hold up as the lone tally of the third and the two teams entered the final 15:00 knotted at 4-all.
Just over a minute into the period, senior John Padua (Hamden, Conn.) tallied what would hold up as the game-winning goal, assisted by senior Bobby Dabrieo (Woburn, Mass.), who earlier had assisted on Gagnon's two goals. Gagnon then took over, scoring three goals in a span of 2:40, giving the Panthers an 8-4 lead. Sophomore John Brule (Northboro, Mass.) and Fontenault then rounded out the scoring.
In addition to his five goals, Gagnon was dominant on face-offs, winning eight of the 11 draws he took. As a team, Plymouth State won 12 of 17 face-offs.
Junior goalie Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 11 saves in the Panther net, including five in the fourth period to earn the win. Sophomore Nick Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) turned aside 14 shots in defeat for the Leopards.
PSU returns to Plymouth for the final regular season home game on Wednesday, hosting Johnson State at Panther Field (4:00 p.m.)
