MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Plymouth State University men's lacrosse team used a balanced scoring effort in its season opener Saturday with a 9-5 win over non-conference opponent Castleton State College. The Panthers started the year on the right track with seven out of the nine goals scored by newcomers.
PSU had to play without three of its starting midfielders due to illness, which created opportunities for new players to step up and indeed they did. The offense was led by junior captain Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.), who tallied one goal and four assists. Freshman Wes Downing (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored three goals in his first collegiate contest, while classmate Alex Blanco (Stratford, Conn.) scored two goals. Sophomore Jordan Buzzell (Bath, Maine) contributed a goal and added an assist, and scoring one goal apiece were first year players Dave Mokos (Londonderry, N.H.), and Tim Hadley (New London, N.H.)
Plymouth State freshman Steve Engel (South Windsor, Conn.) was strong on face offs, while senior Nick Grobe (Winchester, Mass.) anchored the solid defense that only gave up two goals during even situations. Grobe played in the first half making seven saves, while senior goaltender Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) had four saves between the pipes in the second half.
Plymouth State will travel to Florida next week where it will face Plattsburgh State on Saturday and Clarkson the following Wednesday.
