ORLANDO, Fla. - Clarkson University snapped out of a four-game season-opening losing skid Wednesday night with a 12-5 victory over Plymouth State University in men's lacrosse action at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex.
Clarkson led from the start and held a 5-2 advantage after the opening 30 minutes. The Knights outscored the Panthers 4-1 in the third quarter and cruised in the final frame to post the seven-goal victory.
Sophomores Tom Ross (Adams, N.Y.) and Greg Gibbons (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) led the offensive charge for the Golden Knights. Ross tallied three goals and one assist, while Gibbons racked up five points on two goals and three assists. Junior Jamie Merritt (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) and sophomore Brian Hoey (Auburn, N.Y.) chipped in two scores, junior Steve Kennedy (Niskayuna, NY) tallied one goal and three assists; and sophomore Jon Cathcart (Homer, N.Y.) and Erik Hilfinger (Ann Arbor, Mich.) scored one goal each.
The Panthers got goals from five different players - junior Tony Aguiar (Northboro, Mass.), freshman Wes Downing (Glastonbury, Conn.), senior defender Tim Vasconcellos (West Falmouth, Mass.), junior John Cogswell (Jefferson, Mass.) and senior Kyle McKay (Longmeadow, Mass.). Junior Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) contributed to the offense with three assists.
Junior Greg Lamb (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) played the majority of the game in the Knights' goal and posted 11 saves. Sophomore John Svoren (Canisius, N.Y.) made two stops over the final three minutes. Senior Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) posted 11 saves in the Panther goal.
PSU returns to action next Thursday, March 29, at 4:00 p.m. vs. New England College. The game is slated to be played at The Holderness School field, weather and field conditions permitting. The Golden Knights return to the North Country to face defending Division III national champion, Cortland State on Saturday, Mar. 24, in a 3:00 p.m. game at SUNY Potsdam.
