PSU holds off late Curry rally to post non-conference mens lacrosse win
MILTON, Mass. - Plymouth State University scored six unanswered goals in the second half and then held off a fourth-quarter Curry College rally Monday afternoon to defeat the Colonels, 7-6, in non-conference men's lacrosse action.
It was a scoreless game until midway through the second quarter when sophomore Rob Garner (North Quincy, Mass.) put the Colonels on the board. Junior Chandler Metz (Milton, Mass.) put the home team up by two with three minutes to go in the half, and PSU junior Tony Aguiar (Northborough, Mass.) and Curry sophomore Shane Kelley (Windsor, Conn.) traded goals in the last two minutes to make it a 3-1 Colonel lead at the break.
Plymouth State took over in the second half, scoring the only three goals of the third quarter and the first three of the fourth. Aguiar added his second goal to start the rally, and junior Adam Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) scored the game-tying and go-ahead goals to put the Panthers in the lead at the end of three. Freshmen Kyle Belanger (Southington, Conn.) and Wes Downing (Glastonbury, Conn.) and junior Jeremy Sweet (Andover, N.H.) added fourth-quarter goals to push the Panther lead to a 7-3.
Curry (2-7) would not go quietly. Senior Pat Leonard (Londonderry, N.H.) scored consecutive goals with 3:06 and 2:19 on the clock, and then set up a goal by classmate Alex Savioli (Milton, Mass.) with 53 seconds remaining to pull the Colonels to within one. But PSU was able to run out the clock.
PSU senior goalie Steve Valeri (Chelmsford, Mass.) made 12 saves for the Panthers, including six in the second quarter when Curry had the momentum. Junior Alex MacMillan (Framingham, Mass.) made 10 saves for Curry.
Plymouth State's home game on Wednesday against Keene State has been postponed due to snow on Panther Field; no make-up date has been announced. The Panthers, 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play, will travel to UMass Boston on Saturday for a key Little East Conference match-up (1:00 p.m.)
