Little East Conference preseason lacrosse polls released

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Little East Conference pre-season lacrosse coaches' polls have been announced, and Plymouth State University was picked to finish second in the women's poll and fourth in the men's standings.  The votes were cast by the conference's head coaches, and the polls were released by LEC Commissioner Jonathan Harper.

The Panther women's lacrosse team, which finished second in the LEC regular season last season and lost in the LEC Tournament Championship game, finished second in this year's poll.  The Panthers went on to capture the ECAC New England Tournament title for the third time in five years and finish with a 14-5 overall record.

Defending LEC regular season and tournament champion Eastern Connecticut State University received six first-place votes and topped this year's women's poll with 36 points.  PSU was second with 28 points, followed by Keene State with 27 points (and one first-place vote).  The rest of the poll included the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (18 points), the University of Southern Maine (15), Rhode Island College (14) and Western Connecticut State University (9).

The Panther men's lacrosse team, which finished in a three-way tie for third place last season with Western Connecticut and UMass Boston, was picked fourth in this year's preseason poll.  The Panthers were knocked out of the LEC Tournament in overtime by UMass Boston, but came back to capture its first ECAC New England Championship and finish with an 11-6 overall record.

Defending regular season and tournament champion Keene State earned all six possible first-place votes and 36 points to finish first in this year's voting, while 2006 champion and 2007 runner-up Eastern Connecticut finished second with 31 points and the other top vote. Western Connecticut (24 points) edged PSU (23) by a single point for third place, and UMass Boston (14), UMass Dartmouth (13) and Southern Maine (6) rounded out the poll.

The 2008 LEC lacrosse tournaments are scheduled for the first week in May, with the conference champions receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
