PSU Mens Lacrosse nips Lasell in overtime
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Andrew Eriksen (Beverly, Mass.) scored his second goal of the game 51 seconds into overtime Wednesday afternoon as Plymouth State University outlasted Lasell College, 5-4, in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game at Panther Field.
Eriksen (right) finished with a game-high five points with
two goals and three assists. He collected the ball at the top
of the possession box early in the extra session, ran right and
bounced a shot just inside the right goal post for the
game-winner. PSU stopped a four-game losing streak and
improved to 3-6.
Lasell had battled back from a 4-1 halftime deficit to force the overtime with two unanswered goals in the third quarter and the only score of the fourth. The Lasers knotted the score at 4-4 with 3:06 remaining in regulation on an extra-man goal by sophomore Jon Elia (East Lyme, Conn.) The overtime loss dropped Lasell to 2-9 overall.
Freshman Shawn McEvoy (Spring, Texas) scored the only goal of the first quarter to five PSU a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game. Eriksen and junior Andrew Kirwin (Bow, N.H.) tallied goals for the home team just over a minute apart early in the second stanza to make it 3-0 before freshman Andy Puopolo (Duxbury, Mass.) put Lasell on the board with 10:38 on the clock. Senior Brett Zebrowski (Bayville, N.Y.) notched his first goal of the year with 43 seconds remaining in the quarter to make it a 4-1 Panther lead at the break.
The Lasell defense tightened in the third quarter, keeping PSU off the scoreboard while junior Sam Wilcox (Norfolk, Mass.) tallied the only two goals of the period for the visitors, pulling the Lasers to within a goal at 4-3. Both teams had scoring chances in the fourth quarter before Elia’s goal with just over three minutes to play tied the score at 4-4.
Senior Derick Smith (New London, N.H.) led the Panther defense with five grounds balls and three caused turnovers. Junior Kevin Hayes (Beverly, Mass.) made eight saves in the Panther goal.
Senior Matt Haversat (Monroe, Conn.) picked up five ground balls to lead Lasell. Junior Eric Walsh (Weymouth, Mass.) made 11 saves in the Lasers’ goal.
PSU returns to Little East Conference play Saturday with a visit to Salem State College (6:00 p.m.) Lasell gets back into action Saturday at home with a Pilgrim League contest vs. MIT (1:00 p.m.)
