PSU Men’s Lax downs St. Joe’s for fourth straight win

Long, Morello lead Panthers with five goals each

PORTLAND, Maine – Junior Ty Long and freshman Nick Morello scored five goals apiece Thursday evening to lead Plymouth State University to an 18-7 victory over Saint Joseph's College in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest at Deering Memorial Stadium.

Plymouth State was leading 10-7 with 11 minutes left in the third quarter but turned it up a notch, outscoring the Monks 8-0 the rest of the game.  The Panthers went on to their fourth win in a row to improve to 4-1, while St. Joe's dipped to 3-6.

PSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead on goals by four different players, but the Monks answered by scoring four of the next five goals to make it a 5-4 Panther lead after one quarter. Morello tallied three goals in the second quarter as PSU outscored the Monks 4-1 in the frame to take a 9-5 advantage into halftime.

St. Joe's pulled to within three goals (10-7) in the third quarter, but Long scored three times and sophomore Zach Frank added two of his three goals as PUS pulled away with four unanswered tallies to end the third.  The fourth quarter was all PSU as the visitors tacked on four more goals.

The Panthers also got strong performances from sophomores Chris Annunciata and Stephen Patch.  Annunciata recorded two goals and three assists, and Patch chipped in with five assists, five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Classmate Scott Giusti corralled a game-high 14 ground balls in the victory.

Freshman Max Meserve netted a pair of goals in the loss for St. Joe's, and Jonathan Horgan tallied a goal, two assists and a team-high nine ground balls.

Saint Joseph's will host GNAC-rival Daniel Webster College on Thursday. Plymouth State also returns to action on Saturday when the Panthers travel to UMass. Boston for the Little East Conference opener.
