Frank scores four goals for Panthers in LEC setback

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Dylan Kenney scored four goals Wednesday afternoon, including the overtime game-winner, as the University of Southern Maine nipped Plymouth State University, 9-8, in Little East Conference men's lacrosse action at Panther Field.

            The game was tied 5-5 at the half and PSU scored twice late in the third quarter to take an 8-7 lead into the final frame.  USM knotted the score at 8-8 a minute in, and the score remained that way through the final 14 minutes of regulation play.  USM won the overtime face off, and Kenney needed just 26 seconds to tally the game-winning goal.

            The Huskies picked up their first conference win of the season, improving to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the Little East.  PSU dropped its second straight after winning eight in a row, falling to 8-3 overall and 2-2 in the LEC.

            Kenney finished with four goals and one assist for USM, while junior Ryan Foley and senior Dan Thomas tallied two goals each and junior Mark White added a goal and an assist.  Senior Willie Joy won 12 of 21 face-offs for the Huskies.

            Sophomore Zach Frank led the Panther offense with four goals and one assist.  Freshman Nick Morello contributed a goal and three assists, and senior Jared Woodell, sophomore Chris Annunciata and junior Stephen Patch added one goal each.  Freshman defenseman Mike Curley caused four Husky turnovers and picked up a game-high nine ground balls.

            Shots were fairly even, with PSU finishing with a slim 35-33 advantage.  Plymouth State won the battle of ground balls (33-26) while USM took the face-off battle, 12-9.  PSU finished just 1-of-8 with a man-advantage, including coming up empty on a two-man advantage in the third quarter.

            Senior Jack Tyo made 10 saves in the PSU goal, while junior Kyle Dussault stopped 11 shots at the other end in a winning effort.

            Both teams play conference home games on Saturday, PSU hosting Western Connecticut State University and USM returning home to entertain Eastern Connecticut State University.
