Panthers advance to semifinal at Keene State

DANBURY, Conn. – Freshman attack Nick Morello scored three second-half goals Tuesday afternoon, including two in the final quarter, to lift sixth-seeded Plymouth State University to a 9-5 victory over third-seeded Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference men's lacrosse quarterfinal at The WAC.

The Panthers, who were defeated by the Colonials in overtime on Apr. 21, will advance to an LEC semifinal game this Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at second-seeded Keene State College.  PSU will take a 10-5 record into Thursday's game while the Colonials close out the season with a record of 9-7.

Morello scored the games' only goal in the third period to break a 4-4 first-half tie. After Western's Jason Szabo knotted the game five minutes into the final stanza, Plymouth State closed out the game with four unanswered goals over the final 5:46. Morello tallied two more goals that gave the Panthers the lead for good.

Junior Ty Long and sophomore Chris Annunciata also scored two goals apiece for PSU, and freshman Mike Curley picked up a game-high eight ground balls.

PSU senior goalie Jack Tyo was outstanding in goal, making 10 saves. Senior Tyler Martone made six stops for Western in his final collegiate appearance.

Thursday's semifinal is a rematch of the 17-10 Keene State victory over PSU on Apr. 24 in Plymouth.
