Annunciata, Frank lead Panthers in season debut
PORTLAND, Maine – Juniors Chris Annunciata (Waltham, Mass.) and Zach Frank (Wakefield, Mass.) combined to record five goals and six assists Thursday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University men's lacrosse team to a 17-6 victory over Saint Joseph's College in the PSU season opener at Deering Memorial Stadium.
Annunciata tallied a game-high four goals and one assist while also collecting game-high 10 ground balls, while junior Zach Frank (Wakefield, Mass.) contributed a goal and a game-high five assists. Senior Shawn McEvoy (Spring, Texas) also tallied three goals for the winners, while junior Brett Miller (Windham, N.H./Salem) connected on two goals and two assists and sophomore Aaron Boss (Keene, N.H.) added a pair of goals.
The contest was close early as the visiting Panthers held a slim 4-2 lead heading into the second quarter, but Plymouth State scored eight unanswered goals en route to a 12-2 cushion and the eventual 11-goal victory.
The Panthers got on the board just 18 seconds into play when junior Scott Giusti (West Newton, Mass.) scored off an Annunciata feed. The Monks answered nearly five minutes later when junior Andrew Hamill (Wolfeboro, N.H.) tallied a man-up marker. Plymouth State went on to score three straight goals in a matter of three minutes to take a 4-1 lead.
Saint Joseph's junior Jake Ricciardi (Sharon, Mass.) made a 4-2 game with an unassisted marker to cap the first-quarter scoring, but as it played out, the Monks would not hit pay dirt again for nearly 27 minutes. The Panthers poured in eight straight goals to open up a 12-2 advantage, including two each by Annunciata and McEvoy. PSU led 14-3 after three quarters and coasted home in the final frame.
Plymouth State held advantages in shots (55-19), shots on goal (29-10) and ground balls (68-33). Panthers starting goalkeeper Jesse Kutz (Hopkinton, Mass.) made four saves in 30 minutes while freshman Bobby Noonan (Guilford, Conn.) added a pair of stops during the second half.
Plymouth State travels to University of New England on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. face-off versus the Nor'easters. Saint Joseph's resumes play Sunday at Centenary College (N.J.) during the team's spring trip.
