PSU Men’s Lacrosse rallies past Clark

Miller scores five as Panthers win fourth straight

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Brett Miller (Windham, N.H.) scored a career-high five goals Wednesday evening as Plymouth State University rallied for a 15-10 victory over Clark University in non-conference men's lacrosse action at rainy Granger Field.

PSU tallied nine unanswered goals spanning the second and third periods to overcome a 6-3 deficit as the Panthers won their fourth game in a row to improve to 6-1, while Clark dipped to 6-4.

Senior Stephen Patch (Newbury, N.H.) added three goals for PSU, while senior Mike Ventura (Columbia, N.J.) contributed two goals and two assists, senior Ty Long (Dover, N.H.) chipped in with two goals and one assist, and junior Zach Frank (Wakefield, Mass.) finished with a goal and two helpers.

Patch and Miller notched the only two goals of the first quarter to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes.  Clark came alive to start the second frame, scoring four unanswered goals in the first five minutes from four different players.  After Frank answered with a goal for PSU, Rob Holden (East Longmeadow, Mass.) fired in two more for Clark to give the Cougars a 6-3 lead with 3:58 left in the second quarter.

However, for the second consecutive season, these two teams played a game that featured heavy downpours and as was the case in 2012, when the rains came, so did the Plymouth State offense. The Panthers scored the final three goals of the second quarter, getting two from Miller and another from Ventura to even the score at 6-6 and swing the momentum in Plymouth State's direction heading into the locker room.

The Panthers capitalized on the momentum in the third quarter, rattling off six unanswered goals from six different players to open up a 12-6 advantage thru three. After the teams traded goals to start the fourth, Clark registered three straight markers, highlighted by a pair of man-up goals by Jacob Maselek (Marblehead, Mass.), bringing the score to within three at 13-10.

That would be as close as the Cougars would get, however, as the Panthers got insurance goals from Patch and Miller less than a minute apart to seal the victory.

PSU was bolstered by another strong game at the face-off X.  Junior Scott Giusti (West Newton, Mass.) won 11-of-15 face-offs and senior Devon Smith (Plattekill, N.Y.) captured 7-of-9.

Plymouth State returns to Little East Conference action Saturday when it hosts Eastern Connecticut State University, while Clark faces Regis College in Pilgrim League action on Saturday.
