Annunciata, Frank lead Panthers to Little East win
GORHAM, Maine – Junior attack Chris Annunciata (Waltham, Mass.) broke a tie game with a pair of goals in the late stages of the third quarter and the Plymouth State University Panthers went on to defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 10-7, in a Little East Conference men's lacrosse game Wednesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The win lifts the Panthers' record to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in LEC play. The Huskies, playing their final regular season home game, drop to 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
With the game tied at 5-5, Annunciata put the Panthers ahead for good when he converted a feed from junior Zach Frank (Wakefield, Mass.) into his 17th goal of the season with 5:25 remaining in the third quarter. Annunciata netted his second goal less than four minutes later to make it 7-5 after three quarters.
Southern Maine opened the fourth quarter with senior Kyle Baker (Kennebunk, Maine) converting a pass from classmate Mike Orlando (Hanover, Mass.) 24 seconds into the quarter to cut the Panther lead to 7-6. Frank would respond six minutes later with the second of his three goals to give the visitors a two-goal cushion.
Baker again pulled the Huskies within one on a great individual effort. Frank would answer just over a minute later, and junior Brett Miller (Windham, N.H./Salem) iced the decision with an unassisted marker with 1:43 to play.
Frank led the Panthers' offense with his three goals and two assists. Annunciata and seniors Ty Long (Dover, N.H.) and Shawn McEvoy (Spring, Texas) each had two goals. Freshman goalie Bobby Noonan (Guilford, N.H.) picked up his first collegiate win playing the second half and making five saves. Junior Jesse Kutz (Hopkinton, Mass.) played the first half making nine saves.
For the Huskies, Baker had four goals and an assist for a five-point day. Senior Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) had two goals, and junior Steve Ribero (Londonderry, N.H.) chipped in a pair of assists. Senior goalie Ryan Hatch (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) played the first 45 minutes and turned aside five shots. Rookie Ryan Jurgelevich (Portland, Maine) played the last quarter and had four saves.
