PSU Men’s Lacrosse outlasts Lasell
Panthers win see-saw battle to collect first win of season
NEWTON, Mass. – The Plymouth State University men's lacrosse team recorded its first victory of the season Tuesday afternoon with a dramatic 13-12 victory over Lasell College in non-conference action at Grellier Field.
PSU evens its record at 1-1 on the season while Lasell drops to 1-3.
Sophomore Phil Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) led the Panthers with three goals and one assist, while senior Brett Miller (Windham, N.H.) and freshman Nick Pino (North Andover, Mass.) also scored three goals apiece. Senior Chris Annunciata (Waltham, Mass.) and junior Nick Morello (North Billerica, Mass.) also scored twice each.
Freshman Brandon Lee (Canton, Mich.) also had a good day for PSU on face-offs, winning 21 of 27 draws and picking up 13 ground balls. Senior Jesse Kutz (Hopkinton, Mass.) earned the win in goal, making nine saves.
Lasell led 3-1 after one quarter, but the Panthers rallied with five of the first six goals of the second frame to pull ahead, 6-4. Miller had two goals in the Panther rally and Pichel a goal and an assist. Lasell tallied the final three goals of the half, giving the Lasers a 7-6 lead at the intermission.
Pichel tied the score for PSU at 7-7 to start the third quarter. Nearly eight minutes later, Lasell scored twice in a 30-second span to pull ahead 9-7, but PSU scored three times in the final three minutes of the third quarter, including goals by Pino and Miller just five seconds apart, giving the Panthers a 10-9 lead heading into the final frame.
The teams alternated goals in the final 15 minutes. Lasell pulled to within one goal for the final time with four minutes to go, but neither team was able to score the rest of the way.
Andrew Suh (Colchester, Conn.) led the way for Lasell with three goals and three assists and Dylan Fernandes (Billerica, Mass.) recorded a hat-trick of his own. Joe Cunning (Newton, Mass.) netted a pair of scores for the Lasers. Chris Thomas-Ikier (Burlington, Mass.) stopped 11 shots while taking the loss in goal for the Lasers.
Plymouth State returns to the turf Saturday (March 15) with a 1:00 p.m. face-off at Castleton State College.
