Morello leads Panthers to third one-goal victory of season
CASTLETON, Vt. – Junior Nick Morello (North Billerica, Mass.) and senior Chris Annunciata (Waltham, Mass.) scored consecutive goals midway through the fourth quarter Thursday afternoon, breaking a 9-9 tie and sending Plymouth State University to an 11-10 victory over Castleton State College in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Spartan Stadium.
PSU overcame an early 5-0 deficit to tie the game at 5-5 just before the half, and Castleton fought back from down 9-6 late in the third quarter to deadlock the score at 9-9 with 11 minutes remaining in the game. Morello converted a pass from senior Zach Frank (Wakefield, Mass.) for the go-ahead goal with eight minutes to play, and Annunciata potted the eventual game-winner from junior Mike Trocchi (Danvers, Mass.) with 5:17 on the clock.
The Spartans got one back with four minutes remaining, and Castleton possessed the ball for the majority of play, but could not crack the Plymouth State defense to tie the game. Junior goalie Christopher St. George (Marblehead, Mass.) made three saves in the final two minutes to preserve the win for PSU.
The Panthers posted their third one-goal victory of the season, improving to 5-2 overall, while Castleton drops to 7-5.
Morello finished with a game-high five goals to lead PSU. Trocchi recorded two goals and two assists while Annunciata also finished with two goals and Frank contributed a goal and three assists. St. George finished with 19 saves for the win in his first start of the season.
