PSU Men’s Lacrosse pulls away from UMass Boston
Panthers post second straight LEC victory
BOSTON – Plymouth State University scored the first five goals of the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon, turning a two-goal game (7-5) into a runaway as the Panthers pulled away from the University of Massachusetts Boston for a 12-6 victory in a Little East Conference men's lacrosse game at Clark Athletic Field.
Freshman Nicco Sorrentino (Chelmsford, Mass.) had two goals in the decisive Panther run, while seniors Chris Annunciata (Waltham, Mass.) and Scott Giusti (West Newton, Mass.) and junior Aaron Boss (Keene, N.H.) tallied one each and junior Mike Trocchi (Danvers, Mass.) had two assists. They helped PSU improve to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in conference games.
Annunciata led the Panthers with four goals on the afternoon, while Sorrentino and freshman Nick Pino (North Andover, Mass.) tallied two each. Trocchi finished with a goal and three assists and junior Nick Morello (Billerica, Mass.) scored one goal and set up two others.
The Beacons had a balanced offensive attack, with six different players scoring their goals. UMB dropped to 6-8 overall and 1-4 in LEC contests.
PSU led 2-1 after the first 15 minutes and outscored the home team 4-1 in the second quarter, including two goals each from Annunciata and Pino, to take a 6-2 lead at halftime. UMB made a comeback in the third quarter, scoring the three of the four goals to pull to within 7-5, but PSU's fourth quarter surge clinched the victory.
Senior Jesse Kutz (Hopkinton, Mass.) made 12 saves to earn the win in the PSU goal while UMB goalies Craig Frehill and AJ Collette combined for 15 saves.
The Panthers play their final regular season home game Tuesday against LEC Keene State on PSU's Currier Field (4:00 p.m.). UMass Boston also plays again Tuesday at the University of Southern Maine.
