Pino paces Panthers with five goals and two assists
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Keene State College erupted for 10 goals in the second quarter Tuesday afternoon and the Owls went on to post an 18-10 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference men's lacrosse game at Currier Field.
The Owls led 3-1 after the first 15 minutes, but pulled away in the second quarter. Freshman Tyler Reilly (Grafton, Mass.) tallied four goals for the Owls in the period, while classmate Bryan Rotatori (Grafton, Mass.) added three and sophomore Tyler McKelvie (Acton, Mass.) chipped in with a pair.
PSU outscored the visitors 3-1 in the third quarter and opened the scoring in the fourth to cut the deficit to 14-8, but the Owls tallied four of the final six goals to earn the victory.
Keene State won its sixth straight game to improve to 7-6 overall and 6-0 in conference play, clinching at least a share of the LEC regular season title, while PSU had a two-game win streak stopped and fell to 8-4 overall and 3-3 in the Little East.
Freshman Nick Pino (North Andover, Mass.) tallied a game-high seven points for PSU on five goals and two assists. Sophomore Phil Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored twice and senior Chris Annunciata (Waltham, Mass.) and junior Nick Morello (North Billerica, Mass.) contributed a goal and two assists apiece.
McKelvie led the Owls with three goals and three assists on the day, while Reilly finished with four goals and an assist and freshman Robert Hall (Londonderry, N.H.) chipped in with three goals and an assist. Junior Ryan Hart (Richmond, N.H.) finished with a goal and three assists, while junior Kevin Carey (Mahopac, N.Y.) contributed a goal and two assists.
Sophomore goalie Dylan Florian (West Hartford, Conn.) made 15 saves to earn the win on the Owls goal, and junior reserve Jack Rogers (Acton, Mass.) stopped one shot in the last six minutes. Junior Mike Curley (Billerica, Mass.) anchored the defense with three caused turnovers and five ground balls.
PSU dominated the face-offs, winning 24 of the 31 draws. Senior Scott Giusti (West Newton, Mass.) won 17-of-22 and picked up a game-high nine ground balls, while freshman Brandon Lee (Canton, Mich.) captured 7-of-9 face-offs.
Both teams wrap up the regular season on Saturday as PSU travels to Eastern Connecticut State University for a 1:00 p.m. match-up and Keene State hosts Salem State University at 3:00 p.m.
