Tetreault, Pichel lead Panthers to Little East victory
SALEM, Mass. – Junior Mac Tetreault (New Durham, N.H.) scored five goals and senior Phil Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) added four Saturday evening as Plymouth State University topped Salem State 14-8 at Alumni Field.
The Panthers improve to 3-7 on the year and 2-1 in the Little East Conference. Salem State slips to 5-7, 0-3 in conference.
Junior Pete Allen (Newbury, N.H.) added three goals and two assists while senior Bobby Savoia (Plymouth, Mass.) and junior Colin Claflin (Pembroke, Mass.) each added a goal and Clafin three assists for the Panthers.
Alex Pearsons (Burlington, Mass.) – three goals, three assists, Ben Melaugh (Billerica, Mass.), - two goals, one assist and Thomas Lyons (Burlington, Mass.), Jacob Scordato (Milford, Mass.), and Steve Hanley (Wakltham, Mass.) one goal each, all contributed for the Vikings.
Salem State struck first in the opening minutes as Pearsons notched his 23rd goal of the season. Tetreault countered less than a minute later for Plymouth State before Melaugh scored his team-leading 27th goal to put the Vikings up 2-1. The Panthers scored back-to-back goals by Pichel and Allen to regain the lead before a Lyons goal gave the Vikings some momentum back. However, Plymouth State scored the next four goals, including three in the second period to take a 7-4 halftime lead.
Tetreault added his third of the game to open the third, before Melaugh answered for Salem State at the 13:04 mark. Pearsons drew Salem State to within two, 8-6 at the 9:20 mark, but Pichel connected on an assist from Allen to give the Panthers a 9-6 lead in the third. Scordato and Hanley posted consecutive scores for Salem State at the end of the period, which saw Salem State trailing by just a goal, 9-8.
Plymouth State took charge in the fourth, scoring five unanswered goals and outshooting the Vikings 13-7. Allen scored a man up goal and Allen and Tetreault completed the scoring with two apiece to close out the 14-8 win.
Junior Jayson LaRiviere (Chelmsford, Mass.) made six saves in the win while Kevin Lally (Beverly, Mass.) stopped 16 shots in the loss for the Vikings, which went just 8-25 on faceoffs.
Salem State goes to Southern Maine on Wednesday for a 4:00 match while Plymouth State hosts Keene State at 3:30 PM also on Wednesday.
