Cormier's OT goal earns key LEC win for Panthers
PLYOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Cam Cormier (Auburn, Maine) scored the game-winning goal 1:14 into overtime Saturday afternoon to give Plymouth State University a big 9-8 Little East Conference men's lacrosse win over Eastern Connecticut State University at Currier Field.
The Panthers improve their overall record to 4-8 and 3-2 in conference play, while Eastern Connecticut drops its first LEC game of the season and now stands 8-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play. PSU broke a 10-game losing streak to Eastern Conn., dating back to an overtime win at Eastern in the 2008 LEC semifinals.
Junior Mac Tetreault (New Durham, N.H.) led the way offensively for the Panthers with three goals and one assist on the afternoon. Cormier also score once in the first quarter to tie the game at 2-2 early. Senior Phil Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) recorded three assists, and junior Colin Claflin (Pembroke, Mass.) tallied two goals in the second half, both of which gave PSU the lead at the time.
Eastern Connecticut seniors Tim Reilly (Hanover, Mass.) and Liam Murphy (Dover, N.H.) combined for seven goals, Reilly with four and Murphy with three.
Junior Adam Haversat (Cape Elizatbeth, Maine) collected a game-high eight ground balls for PSU, and classmate Jayson LaRiviere (Chelmsford, Mass.) came up big in net the whole game, and finished with 11 saves. Eastern senior Blake Smaldone (Hamilton, Mass.) came away with 15 saves, as the host Panthers held a 24-19 shot advantage.
Both teams are back in action on Tuesday with LEC games, as PSU will travel to the University of Southern Maine, while Eastern Connecticut will host the University of Massachusetts Boston.
