Garland named to Second Team; McCoy voted Rookie of the Year

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Little East Conference Men's Lacrosse All-Star teams were announced Tuesday and two Plymouth State University student-athletes were honored with All-Conference recognition for 2016.

Senior defenseman Ryan Garland (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) was named All-LEC Second Team for the Panthers, the first post-season honor for the four-year veteran, and freshman short-stick defensive midfielder Sam McCoy (Marriottsville, Md./Marriott's Ridge) was voted LEC Men's Lax Rookie of the Year. The All-Conference teams are selected by a vote of the league's head coaches.

A four-year defensive starter for the Panthers, Garland anchored a PSU defense that ranked second in the Little East by allowing just 9.36 goals per game. He often helped shut down the opponents' top scorer, and he was among the team leaders with 32 ground balls and 25 forced turnovers; Garland ranked sixth in the LEC in caused turnovers.

A short-stick defensive middie, McCoy made an impact in his first season, finishing second on the team by picking up 38 ground balls. He played in a regular shift in all 16 games this spring, highlighted by collecting seven ground balls in a key LEC win over Western Connecticut in late April.

The two Panther All-Stars were key players as PSU, 6-10 overall, tied for third in the Little East with a 4-3 conference mark.
