PSU Men’s Lacrosse drops season opener at UNE

Haversat, Tetreault, Claflin lead Panthers in setback

            BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 15-1 lead early in the third quarter Sunday afternoon on its way to a 20-9 non-conference victory over Plymouth State University in a non-conference match played in frigid conditions at the Big Blue Turf.

            The win keeps the Nor'easters' early-season record unblemished at 3-0, while the Panthers drop to 0-1.

            Senior Mac Tetreault (New Durham, N.H.) paced Plymouth State by scoring three goals, and classmate Colin Claflin (Pembroke, Mass.) notched a pair. Claflin and senior Adam Haversat (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) picked up eight ground ball each, and Haversat posted a team-leading four caused turnovers.

GAME DETAILS

* For UNE, senior Andrew Curro (Niskayuna, N.Y.) led all players with four goals, while classmate Dan Auger (Nashua, N.H.), sophomore Mitch Mullin (Cumberland, Maine) and freshman Garett Bozek (Nashua, N.H.) had three apiece.

* Seniors Philip Young (Unionville, Pa.) and J.T. Oliver (Gaithersburg, Md.) and sophomore Jason Erwin (Gloucester, Mass.) each scored twice, and sophomore Alex Zadworny (Florence, Mass.) rounded out the Nor'easters' scoring with a goal.

* The Nor'easters led 4-1 after one quarter and scored all six goals of the second to establish a 10-1 advantage heading into intermission. They would outscore the Panthers 10-8 after halftime for the final margin of 11 goals.

* Starting goalkeeper David Pearson (Scarborough, Maine) made 10 saves in 55:48 of action to earn the win. Senior Sean Conger (Holden, Mass.) won 8 of 14 face-offs to aid the attack. Auger added three assists to his three-goal performance to record a six-point afternoon.
* PSU junior Kyle Stockman (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) won 15 of 25 draws. Goalkeepers Jayson LaRiviere (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Charlie Harrington (Walpole, Mass.) each played a half and totaled nine stops.

NEXT GAME

* UNE returns to action Tuesday with a 7 p.m. home match versus Colby College. The Panthers take on Lasell College Wednesday in a 3:30 p.m. road game.
