PSU Men’s Lacrosse knocks off Lasell

Jacobson leads Panthers with five-point game

AUBURNDALE, Mass. – Sophomore Griffin Jacobson (Windham, Maine) posted a career-high five points to lead Plymouth State University to a 14-9 win over Lasell College in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Grellier Field on Monday evening.

Jacobson was one of four Panthers to tally two goals, and he added a team-high three helpers, as PSU evened its record at 3-3. With the setback the Lasers drop to 2-5.

Jacobson got the scoring started just over five minutes into the first quarter. The Lasers tied the game two minutes later, but three straight Panthers' goals gave the visitors a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Freshman Connor Delea (Manchester, N.H.) notched his first goal of the game to put PSU up 2-1 and sophomore Trevor Gagnon (Pelham, N.H.) and junior Jake Burns (Salem, N.H.) both scored in the final three minutes to make it a three goal game.

The Lasers twice cut the margin to two in the second quarter, but PSU responded each time. Freshman Andrew Fidalgo (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored the first of his three goals to bring Lasell to within 4-2 in the opening two minutes, but Jacobson and senior Drew Lederer (Jefferson, Mass.) countered with strikes for the Panthers to make it 6-2. Lasell scored a pair of goals just over a minute apart to make it 6-4, but junior Ryan Croatti (Brunswick, Maine) beat the clock with a goal with just one second remaining in the half to restore the three-goal advantage for Plymouth State at the intermission.

The Panthers added three goals in the first six minutes of the third quarter to start to pull away. Burns tallied his second, then Delea recorded his team-leading 11th of the year. Sophomore Thomas Kelly (Chantilly, Va.) added a goal with Jacobson being credited with two assists to make it a 10-4 game. Lasell added an unassisted goal with 2:19 remaining to cut it to a 10-5 deficit heading into the fourth quarter.

Fidalgo recorded his second goal of the day in the opening minute to bring the home team to within four, 10-6, but PSU put the game away with four goals in a four-and-a-half minute span. Lederer found the back of the cage with his second goal of the day 2:28 into the frame, and senior Justin Roos (Coram, N.Y.) made it 12-6 a minute-and-a-half later. Sophomore Charlie Harrington (Walpole, Mass.) got into the action at the 10:43 mark and senior Cam Cormier (Auburn, Maine) gave the Panthers a 14-6 lead with just under nine minutes remaining. Lasell closed with the final three goals of the evening, including Fidalgo's third of the game, but it wasn't enough as Plymouth earned the win.

Jacobson finished with two goals, three assists and four ground balls in his career game, while Delea (two goals, one assist, five ground balls), Burns (two goals) and Lederer (two goals) all scored twice. Junior Zel Kerkel (Loudon, N.H.) made 10 saves for PSU to run his record to 3-3, while senior Kyle Stockman (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) went 19-26 in the faceoff circle. Stockman and junior Sam McCoy (Marriottsville, Md.) led the team with seven ground balls apiece.

Plymouth outshot the Lasers by a 44-31 margin and owned a 42-29 advantage in ground balls.

Fidalgo led the way for the Lasers with three goals and two assists, while senior Austin Tomasetti (Elmsford, N.Y.) added two goals and three assists. Sophomore Ryan Janovic (East Lyme, Conn.) made eight saves in the loss, dropping to 2-5 on the season.

The Panthers head to Clark University on Wednesday (Apr. 4) for a 6:00 p.m. contest with the Cougars.
