PSU Men’s Lacrosse tops Salem State for LEC win

Croatti, Jacobson, Delea each score twice for Panthers

SALEM, Mass. – Junior Ryan Croatti (Brunswick, Maine), sophomore Griffin Jacobson (Windham, Maine) and freshman Connor Delea (Manchester, N.H.) each scored a pair of goals as Plymouth State University topped Salem State University, 12-8, in a Little East Conference (LEC) men's lacrosse game at Alumni Field on Friday night.

The Panthers held a 6-3 lead after the first five minutes of the second quarter, but Salem rallied with three straight goals to knot the score at six-apiece at halftime. PSU went back ahead, 9-7, midway through the third quarter but a goal with four minutes left in the frame brought the Vikings within one. Plymouth responded with three goals in the fourth quarter to wrap up the conference win.

PSU evens its record at 4-4 overall, while improving to 2-0 in LEC play. Salem drops to 3-7 and 0-2 in league games.

The first quarter went back-and-forth, with the home team striking first on a goal from freshman Jay Colletti (Billerica, Mass.) just three seconds in. Delea tallied back-to-back goals to put the Panthers in front, 2-1, at the midpoint of the quarter. Sophomore Tyler Billouin (Bedford, Mass.) found the back of the cage with 34 seconds left in the frame to even the game at 2-2, but junior Casey Elkins (Stow, Mass.) snuck in a goal just before the clock expired to give PSU a 3-2 lead after one quarter of play.

Senior Charlie Bourgeois (Billerica, Mass.) scored the first of his two goals to tie the game once again in the opening minute of the second quarter. Plymouth State answered with three straight goals, one each from Jacobson, Delea and senior Drew Lederer (Jefferson, Mass.), to take a 6-3 lead with 10:29 left in the half, but the Vikings answered with a run of three straight and Bourgeois' second of the game tied the score for the fourth time, 6-6, heading into halftime.

The two teams traded goals in the opening four minutes of the third quarter, with junior Chris Waterbury (Clinton, Conn.) scoring for the Panthers. Sophomores Thomas Kelly (Chantilly, Va.) and Trevor Gagnon (Pelham, N.H.) both recorded goals to give Plymouth a 9-7 lead, but Salem cut the deficit to 9-8 with 4:09 remaining in the third quarter.

Jacobson got his second of the game in the opening minute of the fourth quarter and junior Trevor Barrett (Amherst, N.H.) added some insurance midway through the frame to put PSU ahead 11-8. Delea capped the scoring five minutes later with his team-leading 13th of the year to account for the final score.

Senior Kyle Stockman (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) won 17-of-22 faceoffs and picked up a game-high ten ground balls. Delea added two assists to his pair of goals, with Jacobson recording one helper. Junior Zel Kerkel (Loudon, N.H.) earned the win in goal to improve to 4-4.

Bourgeois and junior Zach Persson (Danvers, Mass.) both tallied two goals for the Vikings. Junior Chris Schaub (Brewster, N.Y.) made 16 saves in the losing effort to drop to 3-7.

The Panthers are back in action on Sunday (Apr. 8) for a 3:00 p.m. contest at Castleton University.
