PSC Men's Soccer blanks UMass Boston

BOSTON, Mass. - Plymouth State College used three second half goals Saturday to defeat the University of Massachusetts Boston 3-0 and capture a share of the Little East Conference regular season crown.

The Panthers, who have won five straight games, improve to 10-7 overall and 6-1 in the LEC and share the conference regular season title with Keene State. KSC wins the tiebreaker over PSC due to the Owls' 2-1 win over the Panthers earlier this month, and will be the top seed in next weekend's First Annual LEC Tournament.

Plymouth State will be the second seed in next weekend's tournament, and will host third-seed UMass Boston at 6:00 p.m. Friday (Nov. 5) at Panther Field. Keene State hosts fourth-seeded Eastern Connecticut, with the LEC championship game slated for Sunday (Nov. 7) at the site of the highest remaining seed. The winner of the LEC tourney receives an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

After a scoreless first half Saturday, PSC got on the board just 16 seconds into the second half on senior Kevin Martin's (Foxboro, Mass.) sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Justin Wengell (Newington, Conn.) tallied his first career goal at the 62:45 mark to give PSC a two-goal advantage, and freshman Sal Friello (West haven, Conn.) rounded out the scoring with his fifth of the season with eight minutes remaining. Freshman Rob Ball (Rockaway, NJ) picked up an assist on Friello's goal.

Plymouth State freshman keeper Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, NJ) made one save for his third shutout of the season, while UMB's Orlando Torres stopped six shots.

The Panthers wrap up the regular season on Tuesday (Nov. 2) with a non-conference game at Rivier (6 p.m.). UMB is now 12-7 overall and 4-3 in the LEC.
