FREDONIA, N.Y. - Sophomore Nate Zinteck scored the only goal of the men's soccer match midway through the second half Friday afternoon, giving SUNY Fredonia a 1-0 victory over Plymouth State College in the opening round of the eighth annual Blue Devil Days Inn Classic.
The Panthers, who finished with a 15-5 overall record last year, drop to 0-1 on the young season, while the Blue Devils, who were 13-3-2 last year, improve to 2-1. After a scoreless first half, Zinteck put Fredonia on the scoreboard at the 66:56 mark, with an assist from Ian Smith. It was Zinteck's second goal of the season.
Fredonia had a 17-10 advantage in shots on goal. Blue Devil sophomore keeper Adam Flanders made five saves to record his first career shutout, while PSC junior keeper Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, N.J.) was credited with eight saves. PSC plays a second game in the tournament Saturday at 12 noon against Penn State-Behrend, while Fredonia will take on Salem State at 2 p.m.
