Panthers blank UMD in regular season finale

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Reserve goalkeeper Jayson Smith (Northwood, N.H.) posted his first career shutout Saturday as Plymouth State College blanked the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth 2-0 in the men's soccer regular season finale for both schools.

The victory was big for PSC, as it gives the Panthers second place in the Little East Conference and a bye in the opening round of the LEC Tournament on Tuesday. PSC, 10-5-0 overall, will host a semifinal game at Panther Field next Friday (Nov. 2nd). UMD, now 12-5-0 overall, drops into third place in the LEC and will host sixth-seeded Eastern Connecticut in Tuesday's opening round of the LEC Tourney.

Smith needed to make only five saves to post the shutout for PSC. It was the first complete game of Smith's career. His counterpart, UMD senior Jorge Fonseca, registered three saves.

Junior Justin Wengell (Newington, Conn.) gave PSC the only goal it would need with his fifth of the season midway through the first half. Freshman Nick Libera (Cromwell, Conn.) added an insurance marker, his second of the season, with 30 minutes remaining in the second half.

PSC, the defending LEC Champion, will host the winner of Tuesday's UMD-ECSU match next Friday at Panther Field. Regular season champion Keene State also receives a bye in Tuesday's first round, and will host either fourth-seeded Rhode Island College or fifth seeded Western Connecticut in the other semi-final next Friday. The semifinal winners meet Sunday (Nov. 4) for the LEC Championship and automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
