PSC downs UMD to advance to LEC title game

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Justin Wengell (Newington, Conn.) and senior Antoine Moiboueyi (Gabon, Africa) scored first-half goals less than three minutes apart Friday evening at Panther Field, sending second-seeded Plymouth State College past third-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 2-0, and into the championship game of the Little East Conference men's soccer tournament.

The Panthers will play in Sunday's 12 noon title game against top-seeded and regular season champion Keene State College. The Owls advanced to the championship game with a 3-0 decision over fifth-seeded Western Connecticut in Friday's other semi-final.

The Corsairs, who lost in triple overtime in the LEC championship match at PSC last season, fall to 13-6-0.

The Panthers got on the scoreboard at the 24:29 mark of the first half, when Wengell converted a penalty kick past UMD star keeper Jorge Fonseca (Ludlow, Mass.). A little more than two minutes later, Moiboueyi headed home a free kick into the box from junior Troy Silva (West Tisbury, Mass.). It was Moiboueyi's team-leading seventh goal of the season, while Wengell's goal was his sixth of the year.

Plymouth State senior keeper Scott Laine (Spencer, Mass) registered three saves to post his fifth shutout of the season. Fonseca finished with four saves for the Corsairs. PSC had a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal.

PSC lost at Keene State earlier this season, 2-1 in double overtime. The Panthers are seeking their second straight LEC title and seventh overall since 1989.
