PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Two Plymouth State College student-athletes were recognized by the Little East Conference for their successful play during season-opening tournaments last weekend.
Junior Kate Shirey (Amherst, N.H.) was selected LEC Women's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, and sophomore Paul Dietterle (Newmarket, N.H.) was named LEC Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week. This is the first week of the season that the LEC is selecting award winners.
A 5'10" middle hitter, Shirey was named Most Valuable Player of the Super 8 Invitational last weekend at PSC's Foley Gymnasium. She completed the tournament with 33 kills and eight blocks, including 12 kills in a semifinal victory over Mount Holyoke. Shirey helped PSC to four consecutive victories and the tournament championship,
A 5'11" forward, Dietterle came off the bench and picked an opportune time to score his first career goal. His tally with 20 minutes remaining in regulation broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Panthers a 3-2 victory over Oswego State in the season opener.
PSC Volleyball, 4-0 overall, will be back in tournament action this weekend at the Western New England Tournament Friday and Saturday in Springfield, Mass. The Panther men's soccer team, 1-1-0 overall, plays its next three games at home, beginning Saturday at Panther Field against Salem State (3:00 p.m.).
